What is The RELENTLESS 2800 Team Challenge?
A team physical challenge is where a group of regular people try to cover a distance of 2800 miles in 40 days (70 miles a day). 2800 miles is the distance it takes to cross the United States (from NYC to LA).
It seems impossible, but you’re telling me I could do it?
Yep. The original 10 participants crushed this challenge both in 2022 and then again in 2023. So yes, you can do it. But, there are some additional important caveats that make this challenge more achievable. Read on.
How do I keep track of my miles?
Track all of your “miles” in our app. Here is where things get a bit creative. We don’t TECHNICALLY consider all forms of exercise the same. So, instead of “miles”, we use a measurement we call Relentless Miles (RMs). You’ll need 2800 of them and this is how you earn them:
BIKING: 1 MILE = 1 RM
Biking 7 miles is pretty easy; go for it.
RUNNING/WALKING: 1 KILOMETER = 1 RM
So run that 5K and get 5 RMs. (see note about daily step counters below)
ONE-HOUR WORKOUT ACTIVITY: = 7 RMs
Push yourself at the gym, Body Alive, Orange Theory, Crossfit, swimming, rowing, or time on the tennis court, etc, and earn 7 RMs. NOTE: Activities are recorded in minutes, so go ahead and work out 13 minutes and earn 1.52 points!
Where do I keep track of my Relentless Miles (RMs)?
In the sweet Relentless App! The app links your team and keeps track of your point totals while keeping an eye on all the other teams participating. (This isn’t a race, but it can be fun to see how you stack up against all the other teams.) Access to the app is included in your challenge ticket. You MUST have the app to participate in this challenge.
Anything else I should know??
Yes. Your team MUST get at least 700 RMs biking, running/walking, AND doing timed workouts. Each team must complete at least 700 RMs in those three categories. Beyond that, get points any way you can. (In other words, you can’t just ride 2800 miles on your stationary bike to complete this challenge.)
YOUR TEAM MUST GET:
How Does the Team Thing WOrk?
Every participant must be on a team. Teams will be between 8-12 people. (The ideal team number is 10 which requires each member to log 7 points per day. If you want more of a challenge, do it with 8, less of a challenge, 12.)
CONSIDER FORMING A TEAM AND BEING A LEADER
Leading a team is a really light lift; there is never any requirement to get together or do workouts in person, so teams can be formed with people all over the country. The best way to form a team is to find 1 or 2 other friends you think would love this. Then, ask them to invite their friends, family, and/or co-workers. The heart behind Relentless is the idea that an invitation is a powerful thing.
IF YOU DON’T KNOW ANYONE ELSE DOING THIS
No sweat. Find a team on the app and sign up! There is actually no working out together required, so a team of complete strangers could still win it all. (See more about “winning” below.) But, it IS more fun if you do this with friends.
I’m experiencing issues with the app/website, what should I do?
Let HQ know! This is our BETA test year for Relentless, and we’re actively working to make the app and web experience as good as we can. AND, apps can be fickle. If you have an issue, please email support@relentless2800.com and let us know (to the best of your ability) exactly what issue you’re experiencing, including what OS system and platform you’re on. If we can recreate the problem, we can fix that problem. AND, thank you in advance for the grace.
How do I sign up?!
Just hit “register” on the website and follow the prompts from there. Use code Relentless30 to save 30%.
In this, our BETA test year, we’ve found that once you register, the easiest way to invite is to download the app (Apple or Google), log in, and invite from your phone via text.
Does the Relentless app actually record my distances?
Nope. You’ll need a fitness app for that. We recommend Strava for all biking, walking, and running. It’s free, and you can find it in all the app stores.
Do the steps I get on my FitBit at the end of a workday count towards my distance?
No. Only steps taken while actually going out of your way to work out. If you walk 5 miles at work just because you walked around the office a lot, good for you, but that doesn’t count towards your total distance for the day. #honorsystem
What about something low-impact, like a yoga class or something?
This challenge runs on the honor system. If that yoga really pushed you and you feel like it was a challenge, sure, give yourself points for working out. But if you don’t feel like it was much of a workout, then don’t track it. The goal is to WORK OUT. Again, honor system.
Similarly, if you spend 2 hours at the gym but spend half the time scrolling, chatting, and waiting for machines, that might be closer to 1 hour of effort. Wait for it…honor system.
What about activities like downhill skiing, golf, or marathon games of cricket that take all day?
Once again, see “honor system.” For skiing, maybe consider the approximate amount of time you actually spend actively sliding down the hill. (The hours spent on the chair lift drinking Fireball maybe don’t count.) For golf, measure your steps.
What if I hike all day, but my 700RM bucket for walk/run is already full? Can I apply that time towards the workout bucket?
Sure. Honor system yo.Does this have something to do with the Christian season of Lent?
Relentless started as a challenge held during the season of Lent. Hence, “ReLENTless”. But, it’s really just a 40-day physical challenge to see if you and a group of friends could fictitiously travel across America.
Do I have to believe in some kind of religion or be Catholic to do this?
Nope, all are welcome. However, if you do happen to align with a Catholic or Protestant faith, Lent is a powerful practice. This can be a way to “rethink” it. Instead of “giving something up,” this can be a way to add a challenge that reminds you of the season every day (and be thankful for a body that works!)
How big are the teams?
The perfect team number is 10; however, we understand that numbers don’t always work out perfectly. So, any range between 8 and 12 is acceptable. Gather some other people and get them to sign up!
Can I invite friends who don’t live near Cincinnati to join?
Absolutely. All are welcome.
What if someone on my team doesn’t do any work or gets hurt or something?
You can ALWAYS add more members (up to 12). If one of your teammates needs to drop out due to injury or laziness, your team won’t lose that teammate’s RMs. And then, you can add a new person to help you get to the finish line!
How does my team win?!
Every team who completes 2800 Relentless Miles “wins.” (Of course, we’ll also be watching to see which team can do it first. ; ) But this is a challenge, not a race!
OK, so what does the team with the MOST miles/points win?
Glory. All of it. Plus, they get a side helping of a bunch of skeptical enemies that might be having a hard time finishing. Glory is a double-edged sword!
Well, what if my team reaches 2800 points FIRST?
That’s amazing. Your mother is going to be very proud of you.
Is there like some kind of manifesto written by one of the creators of this thing?
Um, I can’t believe you asked that. But yes, read it here. It will explain more about the name and the history of this event.
Does this cost anything?
Yes. Much like signing up for a physical event like a triathlon or a 10K, you will be AMAZED by how much Relentless pushes you physically for 40 days. And, just like 10Ks and other races, Relentless has an entry fee of $29 plus tax. Use code Relentless30 to save 30%.
Is there an Insta channel I can follow??
Heck yes. Search “relentless2800” or just click here
What if I have more questions?
That would be impossible. But, if you REALLY must ask something, email HQ at hq@relentless2800.com.
This year, for Lent, give up comfort.
